Autumn is absolutely my favourite time of the year. I opened the back door this morning and saw this (click the photo for a bigger image if you want to).
The leaves are golden, the grass in the fields fading to yellow, the rolling hills disappearing in the mist. The cloudless sky starts off white where it meets the hills in the distance ripening to a crisp blue above me. The moon looks down, the sole occupant of this huge ethereal canopy. The air is brisk but dry, tingling my skin, refreshing and invigorating. My breath hangs like a small cloud in front of my face. Birds flying overhead so close, I can hear the air rushing over their wings.
No noise, no cars, no voices, no rush, no pressure, no time, nothing. For a few seconds, I lose myself in the bliss of this moment. It is perfect.
Then it passes, and it is time to move on. No point chasing it, it has already changed. Maybe I'll open the door tomorrow and experience it again.
And maybe I won't.
It doesn't matter.
