It's amazing where a teaching suddenly appears from, often from the most unexpected source. Here's a great quote I came across, spoken by Mr Spock in a 1967 Star Trek episode:"You may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. This is not logical, but it is often true."
So there you have it, 2,500 years of teaching distilled down to 22 words spoken by some bowl-haircutted actor with pointy, latex ears in a 1960s science fiction series. Who'da thunk it?
Note
This episode was written by the American poet and author Theodore Sturgeon who was not, as far as I can tell, a Buddhist. Rather he was an atheist who developed his own, highly imaginative spiritual side. Hmmmm, that sounds familiar....
PS I am not a trekkie! Yes, some of the original episodes were quite good, and yes, I fancied Dr Crusher in The Next Generation, but that doesn't make me a trekkie... does it?

I never knew you were a trekky?
Just for you, Andy, I have amended my post :)
Perhaps Buddha was a Vulcan, except that his ears pointed downward. :)
